Make your linux laptop LCD screen seem brighter

My screen is usually plenty bright, but sometimes it seems too dark if I’m in a bright room, and it’s already at 100% brightness.

I wrote a short script to gradually lower the brightness and then bump it back up. It should get darker slow enough that you don’t notice it, and then suddenly brighten enough that you do. It cycles between brightness values 70 and 90.

I set this script to run every minute in cron.

The location of your ACPI brightness file may be different. This is for a Thinkpad W530.

#!/usr/bin/env bash
BRIGHTNESS=/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
CURVAL=$(cat $BRIGHTNESS)
if [ $CURVAL -gt 70 ];then
  NEWVAL=$((CURVAL - 1))
  echo $NEWVAL > $BRIGHTNESS
else
  echo 90 > $BRIGHTNESS
fi
